The Association for Women in Sports Media Scholarships

AWSM is a nonprofit organization founded in 1987 to support women who work in sports media. They offer paid summer internships at various sports media organizations including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, CNN, and more. Each awardee also receives a $1,000 scholarship to continue their education, as well as a complimentary one-year membership to the organization.

Applicants may apply for positions in the several categories including print/digital reporting, broadcast reporting, broadcast production and media relations. The application period opens September 1 and closes October 31. There is an application fee of $40, but it is waived for AWSM members.

Alliance for Women in Media Scholarships

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation gives scholarships to studentsstarting their careers.They currently have four available scholarships as follows:

  • Ford Emerging Voices Scholarship: Supports scholarships for two female students based on essays written on a suggested topic. Awardees receive a scholarship of $2,000 and get the opportunity to write four blog posts for AWM. They are also invited to attend the Gracie Awards Luncheon.
  • Ford Empowering America Scholarship: Applicants are required to profile or interview a perceived female leader in their community, showcasing why and how this woman impacts those around her. One $3,000 scholarship for a winning student and one $2,000 scholarship for a runner-up will be awarded. Additionally, the winning students will create two profiles/interview pieces for the AWM website with guidance from AWM staff.
  • NCTA/AWM Scholarship: The largest of the four scholarships,the awardee will receive $5,000 towards tuition. Applicants must submit a project concept based on one of three industry-specific topics given, provide a work sample, and a letter of recommendation. They must also include a statement about why they believe the topic is important.
  • Loreen Arbus Foundation Scholarship: This journalist scholarship program consists of one $2,500 scholarship.Applicants must submit a 750-1,000-word essay on a suggested topic in media. The winning can attend the Gracie Awards Luncheon in New York City.The scholarship is open to female undergraduate and graduate students studying media, journalism, English, communications and related fields enrolled.

International Women’s Media Foundation Scholarships

The IWMF’s Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists supports the production of ambitious projects and underreported, globally important stories, serving as a career development grant.

An applicant must identify as a woman and be a full time professional practicing journalist with more than 3 years of post-graduate journalism experience. Teams of journalists may apply, but the team leader must be a female journalist and the group must be at least 50% women. Applications are open in January and are due in March. Awardees will be n notified in July.
